How the monocouche texture is made

The scratch finish isn't paint and it isn't luck — it's a through-coloured render, applied and then hand-scratched back to an even, weatherproof texture. Here's the process on a recent job.

06 — Questions, answered

Before you ask

How much does rendering a house cost?

It depends on the size of the property, access, the condition of the existing walls and the finish you choose. That's why every job starts with a free, no-obligation quote — send us photos or book a visit and you'll get a clear price before any work starts.

What is monocouche render?

Monocouche is a modern one-coat render that's coloured all the way through, usually finished with a scratched texture. Because the colour is in the material itself, it never needs painting, stays weatherproof for years and keeps its look with minimal maintenance.

Can you plaster over Artex?

Yes — in most cases textured Artex ceilings and walls can be prepared and skimmed over for a completely smooth, modern finish. We assess the surface first, seal or scrape back where needed, then plaster over it. It's one of our most requested jobs.

Does render help against damp?

A properly detailed render sheds rain and protects the wall behind it. Just as important is what happens at the base: we use a separate plinth mix above and below the damp-proof course so moisture can't bridge it, keeping rising damp out while the elevation stays fully rendered.

How long does a rendering job take?

Most single elevations take a few days; a full house is typically longer depending on size, scaffold and weather. Interior skimming is usually a day or two per room including drying time between coats. Your quote comes with a realistic timeframe for your job.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in Tyne & Wear and work across Sunderland, Whitburn, South Shields, Newcastle, Gateshead, Washington and Durham. If you're slightly further out, get in touch anyway — we regularly travel across the North East for the right job.
